I Tried Vertical Vegetable Gardening After Our Backyard Flooded

“Just put it on a wall,” Ben said, like that solved anything. We were standing in the backyard — or what used to be the backyard — watching water drain slowly off the lower section of the kitchen garden after the storm that hit us on a Tuesday in late June. Three rows of beans, gone. The tomato seedlings I’d started in the leaning greenhouse in April, bent sideways and muddy. I’d spent weeks reading about vertical vegetable gardening for small backyards because our cleared pasture is uneven and we flood in the corner nearest the tree line, but I hadn’t actually done anything about it. Now I didn’t have much choice.

What follows is less of a success story and more of an honest account of what happened when I had to figure this out fast, under pressure, with limited materials and a partner who was already halfway through building a new rabbit hutch he hadn’t told me about yet.

Tuesday After the Storm

The water wasn’t deep, but it sat. That’s the thing about our low corner — it doesn’t drain toward the creek fast enough, and after a hard rain it can hold moisture in the soil for four or five days. For established plants with deep roots, that’s stressful. For seedlings in loose soil, it’s fatal. I lost about a third of the kitchen garden that week, including everything I’d direct-sown in the two easternmost rows.

Ben walked the perimeter and said we needed to regrade the whole section. He wasn’t wrong, but regrading takes equipment, time, and a plan, none of which we had in late June with the growing season already running. I needed plants in the ground — or off it — within a week if I wanted any summer harvest at all. Vertical was the fastest answer I had.

The flooded section is about 400 square feet. Not a lot of space to work with even under good conditions. So whatever I built needed to be compact, go up instead of out, and not cost me a week of evenings to construct.

How to Build a Basic Vertical Structure Without Spending $300

I’ve seen vertical garden setups online that cost more than our first month’s mortgage payment. Pocket planters, tiered systems, powder-coated steel frames. That’s not what I did. Here’s what actually worked for us, built mostly from things already on the property or purchased at Tractor Supply for under sixty dollars total.

  1. Source cattle panels, not trellis netting. Trellis netting is cheap but it sags under any real weight. Cattle panels — the 16-foot, 50-inch-tall kind — are rigid and last for years. We had two leftover from the goat pen expansion. If you’re buying new, expect around $25–$30 each at a farm supply store. One panel covers a lot of growing space.
  2. Anchor with T-posts, not wooden stakes. Wooden stakes pulled out of the soft post-flood soil on day two. T-posts hammered 18 inches down did not. You’ll need at least two per panel, one at each end. Rent a T-post driver if you don’t own one — swinging a heavy pipe works but takes twice as long and leaves your shoulders useless the next day.
  3. Arch the panel or lean it at a 15-degree angle. A flat vertical panel is fine, but arching it creates a tunnel effect that gives you planting space on both sides. Lean it and stake both ends into the ground. Ben suggested this and I told him it would tip over. It hasn’t tipped over.
  4. Attach containers to the lower portions with wire clips or zip ties. For plants that don’t climb — herbs, lettuces, compact peppers — you can hang basic grow bags or repurposed plastic containers directly to the panel using zip ties or fencing wire. This is where it gets fiddly and takes longer than you expect, but it’s not complicated.
  5. Leave 18 inches of clearance at the base. I didn’t do this at first. More on that later.
Before you build:

  • Know which direction your structure will face — south-facing gets more sun but dries faster
  • Check soil condition at the base before planting; if it’s still waterlogged, containers on the panel beat ground planting
  • In Zone 7a (central Tennessee), don’t rush vertical plantings before mid-April — a late frost will take your climbers fast
  • Have your watering plan figured out before the plants go in, not after

The vegetables that actually grow upward (and which ones pretend to)

Pole beans are the easy answer and they earn it. Plant them at the base of a cattle panel, give them something to grab, and they will climb four feet without any help from you. They produce reliably, they’re fast, and they don’t get confused by vertical growing the way some plants do. Cucumbers are similar — they want to climb, and if the structure is rigid enough, they’ll hold fruit without needing extra support.

Indeterminate tomatoes are a different story. They’ll grow tall and they respond well to being tied to a vertical structure, but they’re not really climbing — you’re doing the climbing work for them. You’ll be out there every few days tying new growth. I used strips of old t-shirt fabric instead of twist ties, which was cheaper and didn’t cut into the stems. It worked, but calling tomatoes a “vertical plant” is generous. They’re a vertical plant the way a toddler is a self-sufficient creature. You’re still doing most of the work.

Squash is where the advice falls apart. Every vertical gardening guide will tell you that squash can be trained upward with a sling for each fruit. This is technically true. But winter squash fruits get heavy — we’re talking two, three, four pounds — and the slings fail, or the vine pulls away from the structure, or you end up spending more time engineering support for individual fruits than you would have just growing them on the ground. I gave up on vertical squash by August. Summer squash is more manageable but still not ideal. Stick to bush varieties in containers if squash is important to you.

Lettuces and herbs in hanging containers worked better than I expected. They don’t climb, obviously, but attached to the lower portion of the panel they stayed off the wet soil and produced well. Does any of this actually save money?

I’ve been trying to figure this out for two months and I genuinely don’t have a clear answer. The setup cost was around sixty dollars in materials I didn’t already own. Seeds were another fifteen. I had the T-posts, the zip ties, most of the containers. If you’re starting from nothing, budget closer to $120–$150 for a single two-panel setup.

In terms of produce value — I harvested beans steadily from late July through September, cucumbers for about six weeks, and a reasonable amount of herbs throughout. Whether that offsets the cost depends entirely on what you’d normally spend at the grocery store or farmers market, and how you count your own labor. I haven’t done the math in a way that makes me feel good about it either direction.

What I can say is that the vertical setup replaced production I would have lost entirely to the flood, which changes the calculation. Compared to buying everything at the market for the rest of the summer, I came out ahead. Compared to a season where the flood hadn’t happened and the ground beds were working fine? Less clear. The USDA National Agricultural Library has research on small-scale food production economics if you want the actual numbers, but for backyard scale it’s honestly hard to pin down.

What happened when I ignored the spacing guide

I planted too many cucumber starts at the base of one panel. I knew the recommended spacing was twelve inches and I put them at six because I was trying to maximize the section I had. By mid-July, the foliage was dense enough that air couldn’t move through properly. Powdery mildew showed up on the lower leaves first, then spread upward. I lost about a third of the cucumbers to it, and spent two weeks spraying a baking soda solution that slowed things but didn’t stop them.

The disease spread to the beans on the adjacent panel, which was a surprise — I hadn’t expected that kind of cross-contamination from overcrowding on separate structures. I ended up pulling the affected cucumber plants entirely by early August, about three weeks before I should have. The lesson isn’t just “follow the spacing guide” — it’s that vertical growing actually concentrates the disease problem. Plants packed tight on a vertical surface have less airflow than the same plants in open ground. The spacing guides that come with vertical gardening systems assume ideal conditions. If your setup is in a corner or against a fence, add a few more inches to whatever spacing is recommended.

The watering problem everyone downplays

Nobody talks about this enough, and I think it’s because most vertical gardening content is written by people who tested the concept in good weather with a drip system already in place. In our Tennessee summer, which runs hot and dry through July and August even in a year with spring flooding, the containers on the panel dried out in under 24 hours on hot days. The ground bed dried faster vertically than it would have horizontally because water runs down and away from shallow-rooted plants instead of sitting in the soil profile.

I was watering twice a day by late July. That’s not a minor inconvenience — it’s a daily commitment that didn’t show up in any of the “easy vertical garden” tutorials I watched. If you’re adding a vertical setup and you don’t have a drip system or soaker hose running to it, budget the time for hand watering and be honest with yourself about whether you’ll do it consistently. I missed two mornings during a busy work week and lost two young pepper plants in the containers.

A simple drip irrigation kit — the kind with emitters you can space along a line — costs around $25–$40 and would have saved me more produce value than that. I ordered one after the pepper incident. Why it worked when nothing else did

The flooded ground wasn’t usable. That’s the whole story, really. Vertical growing for small backyard spaces solved a specific problem — soil I couldn’t plant in — by getting roots into containers and air, rather than waterlogged earth. It wasn’t simpler than regular gardening. It wasn’t cheaper in any obvious way. The watering alone made it more labor-intensive than a normal ground bed.

But it worked when the alternative was losing the whole season. Hank wandered through the setup once, knocked a container loose, and showed no remorse. The beans came in. The cucumbers mostly came in. And now I have a cattle panel system that’s still standing and will go back up next spring with better spacing and a drip line already attached.

If you’re in a situation where your soil just doesn’t cooperate — flooding, compaction, poor drainage, or you’re renting and can’t dig — container-based vertical growing is worth the setup time. Just go in knowing that water management is the part that will actually determine whether it succeeds or fails, not the structure itself.
