How We Handle Our Backyard Chickens Now (After Getting It Wrong)
Most backyard chickens raising ideas you’ll find online are written by people either in the first flush of excitement or trying to sell you something. I’m three years into this, we’re in rural Tennessee on five acres, and I’ve had birds die from things I didn’t know to watch for and coops fail in ways that seemed impossible on paper. This is what I actually do now, and why some of what I did before was wrong.
We started with six hens our first spring here. By fall we had twelve. That felt like success until I started adding up the feed bills and patching the run for the fourth time.
The first 48 hours matter more than everything else
New birds, whether they’re chicks or pullets, are disoriented and vulnerable the moment you bring them home. What you do in those first two days shapes how they settle in, whether they eat and drink properly, and whether your existing flock accepts them without injury. Most losses I hear about from new chicken keepers happen in this window.
- Keep them separate from any existing flock for a minimum of 30 days. This isn’t optional. Marek’s disease and respiratory infections can look like nothing for weeks. We lost two birds our first year because we skipped this step and introduced pullets too fast.
- Provide electrolytes in the water for the first 48 hours. You can buy poultry electrolyte powder at Tractor Supply for a few dollars. Chicks especially dehydrate fast and the stress of transit makes it worse.
- Show them the waterer by dipping their beaks once each. Sounds unnecessary. It’s not. Chicks don’t automatically find water — they need one demonstration.
- Keep brooder temperature at around 95°F for chicks in week one, dropping 5 degrees each week. A basic heat lamp works. We use a 250-watt red bulb, around $8 at most farm stores. Red bulbs reduce pecking compared to white.
- Do not over-handle chicks in the first 48 hours. Ben wanted to hold all of them immediately. I get it. Don’t. Let them eat and rest first.
- Watch for pasty butt in chicks under a week old. It’s exactly what it sounds like — dried droppings blocking the vent. Check daily. Clean gently with a warm wet cloth. Untreated, it kills them.
For integrating new birds into an existing flock, we use a wire divider inside the run so they can see each other without contact for a week before mixing. It cuts down on serious fights. Not all of them, but most.
Predators don’t follow the rules you read about
The standard advice is hardware cloth, a latching door, and you’re covered. That’s incomplete.
We lost three birds to a weasel that came through a gap I genuinely cannot explain. The hole was the size of a silver dollar. We’d used hardware cloth on the lower sections of the run but standard chicken wire at the top because everything I read said weasels don’t climb. They climb. We also lost a hen to a hawk that sat on the roof of our coop for two hours in broad daylight before it figured out the angle. This was a Tuesday. Ben was standing twenty feet away doing something with the tractor and still didn’t see it happen.
Raccoons are patient in a way that unsettles me. They will test a latch repeatedly over multiple nights. A carabiner clipped through the latch — not a padlock, just a carabiner — has stopped every raccoon attempt we’ve had since year two. Our state extension service at University of Tennessee Extension has a predator control guide that’s more honest about regional threats than most of what you’ll find on general poultry sites.
Dogs are the predator nobody wants to talk about. Neighbor dogs, stray dogs, your own dogs if you’re not careful with introductions. More chickens die to dogs than to foxes on small properties like ours. The run needs to be built assuming a motivated 50-pound animal is going to throw itself at the corners.
One thing I genuinely don’t have a solution for: aerial predators when the birds are free-ranging. We have a rooster now who alerts the flock, and we have more tree cover than we used to. But if a sharp-shinned hawk decides it wants one of our hens, there’s a real limit to what I can do short of keeping them confined all day, which defeats the purpose.
Space calculations everyone gets wrong
The “4 square feet per bird inside, 10 square feet per bird in the run” figures that circulate everywhere are minimums for commercial operations designed to prevent disease spread and cannibalism in contained environments. They are not the target. They are the floor below which things go badly wrong.
We have 12 birds in a coop that’s roughly 8×10 feet, with a run that’s 12×20. By the standard math, that’s fine. In practice, during wet Tennessee winters when the ground is a mess and the birds don’t want to go outside, it’s cramped. Boredom-related pecking picks up noticeably when they’re cooped up for more than two or three days. We added a second roosting bar and hung cabbage for them to peck at, which helps, but I wish we’d built bigger from the start.
If you have the option, double whatever the calculators say. Coop builds are expensive once — around $300-500 in materials for a basic solid structure if Ben’s doing the labor, more if you’re hiring it out — but undersized coops cost you in bird health and replacement costs over years.
The space calculation that matters isn’t how many square feet per bird. It’s whether every bird can get away from every other bird when they need to.
The spreadsheet approach (that I abandoned)
First year, I tracked feed costs by the week, egg counts by the day, and kept a log of every health observation. I had a whole system. It lasted about four months before I stopped updating it because actual farm life — plus the bookkeeping work I do remotely, plus the garden, plus Pepper getting out again — meant the spreadsheet was always two weeks behind and useless.
What I do now is simpler: I weigh a 50-pound bag of feed when I open it, note the date, and note when it runs out. That tells me consumption rate. Egg count I do in my head at collection. If something looks off with a bird, I write it on the paper calendar on the wall by the back door, because I will actually look at that. Extension Poultry has flock health resources I’ve found genuinely useful when something comes up that I can’t identify from casual observation.
Why flock dynamics still confuse me
Three years in and I cannot predict what this flock is going to do. I’ve read about pecking order, I understand the basics of chicken social structure, and I still get surprised. We had a hen — an Australorp named nothing because Ben said not to name them and I mostly listened — who was mid-ranking for two full years and then in the span of a week became the bird every other hen avoided. Nothing visible changed. No new birds, no injury, no obvious event.
I’ve noticed that breed mixing matters more than most guides acknowledge. Our Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks coexist fine. Adding the two Easter Eggers created weird friction I didn’t anticipate, and I still don’t fully understand why. They’re lower-ranking but also seem to have a separate social cluster from the rest of the flock.
Molt throws everything off too. A hen coming out of molt loses and regains her position in ways I can’t track. By the time I’ve figured out the new order, something’s changed again. I don’t have a formula for this. I just watch, and when I see blood I intervene, and the rest of the time I try to provide enough space and distraction that the drama stays manageable.
- Multiple feeding stations so low-ranking birds can eat without being guarded off
- Roosting bars at different heights — birds sort themselves vertically and it reduces competition
- Scatter feeding sometimes instead of always using a feeder — gets them foraging and moving
- Solid visual barriers inside the run so a picked-on bird can get out of sight
The economics don’t work out (and that’s not the point)
We spend roughly $40-50 a month on feed and bedding for 12 birds. In peak summer we get 8-10 eggs a day. In winter, with shorter days and no supplemental lighting, we might get 3. Averaged over a year, our cost per dozen is higher than grocery store eggs. Not by a little.
This is true for almost everyone keeping a small backyard flock unless they’re also selling eggs regularly. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service tracks egg production data if you want to dig into actual commercial cost comparisons, but for a small home flock, the math just doesn’t compete with a carton of eggs from the store.
Ben’s position on this, stated once and then never again because I think he could tell I didn’t want to hear it: “We’re basically paying for the experience.” He’s not wrong. What we get isn’t cheaper eggs. It’s eggs we watched get laid this morning, in yolks that are genuinely different from store eggs because our birds eat grass and bugs and whatever they scratch up in the run. We get compost material. We get something that keeps us more connected to where our food comes from than we were three years ago in the suburbs.
That’s worth something. But it’s not savings. Anyone getting into chickens expecting to cut their grocery bill is going to be disappointed inside six months.
What we actually changed after the first flock
We lost four birds in year one. Causes varied. Here’s the honest accounting of what we got wrong and what we changed:
- Predator loss (two birds): We used chicken wire instead of hardware cloth on parts of the run. Chicken wire keeps chickens in. It does not keep predators out. We replaced every section with 1/2″ hardware cloth. Expensive — about $80 in materials — but we haven’t had another breach since.
- Integration loss (one bird): Added pullets without a quarantine period. One of them brought something in, and we lost an established hen within three weeks. Thirty-day quarantine is now non-negotiable.
- Coop design failure: Ben built the first coop without a droppings board under the roost, which meant I was cleaning the whole floor every few days. We added a removable board at about roost height with a lip on three sides. Scrapes off in two minutes every morning. No idea why more coop plans don’t include this by default.
- Waterer placement: We put the waterer inside the coop. Spills and humidity from the waterer made the bedding wet constantly, which led to respiratory issues. Moved it outside the coop door, under a small overhang Ben built in an afternoon. Problem mostly solved.
- Lifestyle mismatch: Chickens need attention every day. Not a lot, but every day. We took a three-day trip in year one and our neighbor checked in once a day, which should have been fine. The automatic waterer got knocked over on day two and she didn’t notice until day three. Everyone survived but it was close. We now have a dedicated chicken sitter who knows the setup, and we check in via a cheap outdoor camera Ben mounted on the coop roof.
The camera was his idea and I resisted it because it felt like overkill. It cost $35. I’ve used it to catch a waterer problem, confirm a weird noise at night was just Hank investigating the run, and check on a hen I was worried about without going back outside in the cold. It was worth it.
